De Lo Ultimo cafeteria was one of my favorite restaurants.

Their pastelitos were tasty! With a great variety of fillings from which to choose, I enjoyed the 'chicken and vegetable' version.  It was a little larger than the rest, normally.  The Hawaiian and the 'ham and cheeses' pastelitos were also very popular (and cheaper.)

I also enjoyed their vegetable soup, which seemed to be made from whatever leftover veggies there may have been at the time.  It was a 'little' different every time.

The 'batida de fresa' (strawberry milkshake) was phenomenal.  Made with fresh strawberries, milk and ice blended together (I asked for no sugar in mine.)  It made for a refreshing addition to any meal on hot day!

Other 'Americanos' often bought the nicely sized cheese burger as a memory of 'home'. :)

This restaurant is a little more expensive than the average 'fast food' / 'typical Dominican food' restaurant in Jarabacoa, but it is well worth the cost!

You can find this restaurant on the left side of Ave. Independencia just after Calle Duarte (just past the RC Papeleria) 1 block west from the park.

You just need to get to know the staff better.  Strike up a conversation and such.

Yes, she may not smile much... but, I believe you may be approaching things from a North American point of view.

We expect friendly, courteous, 'go out of your way' type of service in restaurants.

Maybe they were nervous or intimidated by the group of 'gringos'?  Perhaps afraid they wouldn't understand their orders, etc.?

There was a relatively new guy there (over from Leņa) and he would like to practice English with me.  I even invited one of the waitresses over for dinner once!
